Explanation of Development Process Terms
Course Authorization due
The Course Authorization is the form that is used to request assistance to revise or develop your course with the College of Continuing Studies (CCS). A representative from your academic department contacts the CCS Program Manager to request a course development/revision for delivery during the semester indicated on the Online Course Development Schedule and identifies a Content Expert (CE) to develop the course.
Initial Experience begins
You will be contacted via email at the start of the Initial Experience and enrolled in the Online Initial Experience in Blackboard.
Submit course outline
The course outline is completed and submitted in the Online Initial Experience, identifying your objectives and
activities/assessments for each module in your course.
Submit expanded outline
Starting from the course outline, you will expand one module to include details related to your planned course materials and activities (assignments, discussion prompts, readings, topics of associated videos, etc.).
Design meeting
An instructional designer(s) will schedule a meeting with you to discuss your goals for the course and the expanded outline you provided during the initial experience.
Course content due
All of the content and materials for use in the course should be sent to your instructional designer(s).
Iterative development of course assets and media production
Working with your instructional designer(s), you will plan, strategize, organize, and design course materials. You will also be working on planning and producing media, as needed, to support stated course objectives.
All course content and media finalized
For the course to be completed in time, all course content should be finalized and all media should be recorded and/or sent to your instructional designer.
Review process
Course materials will be sent for review by CCS stakeholders and a copyeditor, as well as departmental and college representatives. Media production may continue during this time.
Blackboard development shell complete
Contents are constructed in the Blackboard development shell and reviewed by instructional designer(s) and CCS tech support for completeness and correctness. The fully constructed development shell is provided for your final review of its contents. CCS will make changes as needed. If required, requests to super-section the course should be sent to CCS.
Course copied and made available to students
After the course receives departmental approval, the Blackboard development shell will be copied into the live course shell and be made available to enrolled students on the first day of the semester.
